Hi:  My name is Louie Kittani and I learned how to grow grapes the hard way.

I have been growing grapes in Colorado for 25 years now ...  this year is my actually my 25th anniversary.   My family and friends now occasionally call me "Louie The Wino" ... I am not really sure how I feel about that ... but they all sure like the wines I make.

When I first learned how to grow grapes, I was probably just like you are now in many ways.

I had a piece of dirt ... (my backyard) ... and I was "curious" about making homemade wine.  When I started, I actually had more curiosity than real knowledge about how to grow grapes.

I thought to myself ... "How hard can this be?"

I went to a local nursery store and bought a few grape vines that looked pretty good.  I dug a few holes in my back yard, planted the grapes and built a trellis to support them.  It all looked pretty solid to me!

Well, my first attempt growing grapes was a disaster ... some of my mistakes included:

>> My trellis was too weak to support the grape vines.

>> I bought a few "old" vines because I did not know that "age matters" ... it does !

>> My vines were planted too close together and that dramatically reduced the size of my harvest.

Then I thought .... "Hmmmm, maybe this is not like planting tomatoes."

I essentially wasted two years and at that point, I was being called "Louie the grape growing dummy" !

But I did not give up and I'm glad that I did not.  I started reading and learning about how to grow grapes and I discovered all of the mistakes I had made in my first attempt.
